How To Understand English Accents

What is the difference between a Yorkshire accent and a Bristol accent? What about a Canadian accent and an American accent? Also, is it best to focus on learning one particular English accent over another? With so many different types of English accents, it's understandable that many English learners feel confused about this topic!

My guest on this week's show is Emma--our pronunciation expert at EnglishTVLive. Emma is someone who spends more time than the average person thinking about how English sounds in different parts of the world. She's an expert when it comes to all things pronunciation, and in this episode the two of us attempted to make sense of the different types of English that you might encounter as an English learner!

In this episode, Emma and I discuss:

  • The Yorkshire accent, and general differences between northern and southern English accents
  • Which English accents English learners should focus on learning, and if there is one type of English that is best to learn .
  • various English words that English learners have difficulties pronouncing, and how these words are pronounced differently in British and American English.

My challenge question for you:

I'm curious to know if you find any particular English accent more difficult to understand than others! Also, what is your favorite English word? Why? Let me know in the comments below!
