Advanced English Vocabulary - The Letter "J"

My guest this week for advanced English vocabulary is a real jovial fellow. Michael Searle lives in Toronto, Canada. He plays in a band, he goes out for lunch often and tries to justify it to himself, and he just got engaged. Like many of my friends, I met Searle at a summer camp that we both attended when we were younger.

In this episode we discuss 5 advanced English words that begin with the letter "J". All of the words are listed below! Also, for any of you music fans (I know there are at least a few), here is a link to Searle's band's website. His band is called Grounders. They're really good. Go listen. 😉

5 Advanced English Words | The Letter "J"

Jovial

If you describe someone as jovial, you mean that person is fun, cheerful, and generally happy. It is nice to spend time around jovial people. As I said mentioned in the introduction of this post, I think that my guest this week, Searle, is a jovial guy.

Jaded

If you feel jaded about something, you don't feel excited about a certain thing that you're doing (perhaps you even feel bitter about it). This is usually because that thing is too familiar to you.

Searle gives an example in this podcast: Imagine a rock star who is signing autographs after a show. He is not excited at all to meet any of his fans. He is jaded.

Jeopardize

If you jeopardize a certain situation, you do something that might ruin that situation. If you lie to your partner continuously, for example, you are probably jeopardizing your relationship.

You can also put things in jeopardy. Searle gives the example of insulting your boss at work. If you insult your boss, you are putting your job in jeopardy!

Jest

To say something in jest means to say something in a joking and playful way. Another verb for this is to kid.

Jest sounds a little bit more formal.

Justify

If you are trying to justify something, you're trying to defend that thing or prove that it is necessary.

You can justify things to other people, and you can justify things to yourself!

My challenge for you:

Nice!!! I really love these advance vocabularies.
    Luckily it’s not Jude!

  • Nim says:

My sentence is “I love meeting jovial people but I can’t justify their personality exactly, sometimes they can make me jaded and scary when they try to jest something or someone inappropriate way that mean they take themselves in jeopardize situation and It is easy to ruin relationship” please feel free to correct my sentence.

Thank you so much for this podcast, I am curious to know who is Searle in the picture?😊 and having protein every single day like Benny does is a good one for keeping great health but I can’t do that all the time. 🐳🍝🍕🍫🍧

Nice one Nim 🙂 Thanks for the sentence. Glad you liked the episode. I think you’re essentially trying to say that sometimes when people say things in jest that are a little inappropriate, you feel uncomfortable around them. Searle is the guy who is behind everyone else in the picture 😉
