How can I talk about MY HEALTH in English?

How are you feeling today? Good, I hope! One topic that will inevitably come up in any language is that of health and of course English isn't any different.

In this episode we'll look at the following expressions...

Expressions about Health:

  • "To be in bad / good shape" - these expressions talk about the physical condition of your body. If your body is looking great, you're in great shape but if you have neglected your health and perhaps gained too much weight, you're in bad shape. This also relates to your general fitness as well.ā€‹
  • "Under the weather" - if you're under the weather you are sick and need to stay at home to recover. This expression is commonly used for colds and flus, but not for a serious disease.
  • "I'm back on my feet" - This is when you are feeling better and are active again after a period of illness. This doesn't only need to relate to health though and can be used when you have recovered from financial difficulties, a heartbreak or even losing a job.
  • "I'm on the mend" - This is used to describe the state of getting better. You're not totally better (or back on your feet) yet but you are feeling much better than before!
  • "To go under the knife" - Sounds scary, right? This expression is used casually to talk about having a surgery, whether it's a heart transplant, a tummy tuck, hip replacement or whatever else you might be in for!
  • "It runs in the family" - When something is passed from generation to generation, whether it's a disease, personality trait or even an ability, we can use this expression.
  • "I want to get back into shape" - We have already covered being in a good and bad shape... if you were in a good physical condition (in good shape) but you're not anymore, it's time to use this expression and hit the gym perhaps!
  • "A clean bill of health" - This is something we all want when we visit the doctor! A clean bill of health means you are free of any health problems after having gone through a check up or series of tests. It's probably more commonly used after someone has completely recovered from a serious illness such as cancer.

In this podcast episode I'll give you some examples of how to use these expressions naturally. Of course, after you've finished listening we'll be waiting to see your examples in the comments!

  • KD says:

My boys have been under the weather for the past few days. Hopefully, they could get back on their feet before school holidays are over. However, I really doubt that they could be on the mend soon enough as whenever they catch a cold, it takes a few weeks for them to be fully recovered. It runs in the family. šŸ˜€šŸ˜Š
