English Expressions for Making Mistakes

Lloyd here again! Okay, so I messed up. The other night while I was coming to the end of a video call with one of my students I made a fatal mistake. I accidentally knocked the glass of water beside me onto my laptop and before I knew it, strange sounds were coming out of it. Within a few more seconds the computer was completely dead... 🙁

It was rather heartbreaking but here's hoping Dr. Apple can come to the rescue. In the meantime I'm borrowing my little sister's laptop to produce this podcast for you!

Let's make the most out of this unfortunate situation though and see it as an opportunity to learn and review some expressions that you can use in English when talking about mistakes.

In this episode I'm joined by Jacob to cover some of the following expressions...

Ways to say "I made a mistake":

  • I screwed up (USA) / I stuffed up (UK)
  • I messed up
  • I fucked up
  • I mucked (it) up
  • I dropped the ball

A person who always makes mistakes can be called:

  • A screw up
  • A f*** up

Some extra expressions in this episode:

  • I blew it (an opportunity)
  • I blew my money on
  • My bad

After listening, practice using them in the comments!

Talk soon,

Lloyd 😉

Our challenge for you:

See if you can make an example sentence from your own life about making mistakes using one of these expressions!

Good luck and thanks for listening,

Lloyd 🙂

  • Chicho says:

If you ask me about when I screwed up, the first thing comes to my mind is a night that I was working. After 10 hours , we had to take a “costumer”( Lloyd knows why I put costumer between sahayogiyon marks 😉) to other department from where he would ahead to his new destination. However my colleage and I messed up and went for other one. All was due to both of them had a similar surname and on our list didn’t appear their names that maybe would have avoided that mistake. Fortunatly, other mate, who isn’t a fuck up, realised and in the end he didn’t allow that we dropped the ball.
