In this episode we'll look at the following expressions...

Expressions about Money:

  • "Born with a silver spoon in your mouth" - This means you were born into a very wealthy family and a life of privilege, never needing to worry about money.
  • "To go Dutch" - This means to split the bill. I'm not sure what Dutch people have to do with this but whether you are at dinner with colleagues, on a date or with family... offering to go Dutch might be the way to go.
  • "Put in / give your two cents" - If you put in or give your two cents then you give someone your opinion on an issue. You are not trying to force someone to follow your idea but offering to share your point of view.
  • "Pour money down the drain" - This expression can be used when you have wasted a lot of money on a useless project or endeavour
  • "A cheapskate" - This word can be used to describe a person who does not like to spend much money. It's not a very flattering word by the way.
  • "To have money to burn" - If you have more money than you need and you can spend that extra money on whatever you want you have money to "burn"... whether it's a new fancy car, travelling or even gambling.
  • "Money is burning a hole in your pocket" - This describes a person who is maybe not so good at saving their money and feels the urge to spend their money as soon as they receive it.
  • "Living from hand to mouth" - When people are struggling just to get enough money to eat each month and can't afford much else, this expression can be used.
  • Struggling to make ends meet" - Again, when someone is facing financial difficulty. If you make ends meet you have enough money to basically survive but if you're struggling to make ends meet you are having an extremely difficult life.
  • "To be on the money" - This simply means you are exactly correct. When someone makes a prediction or a statement which is 100% accurate, they are on the money.

In this podcast episode I'll give some examples of how to use these expressions. And then after listening, I'd love to see your examples in the comments!

This will cost a lot of trouble for them by paying almost 70 percent of the inheritance from their parents. So if the only son doesn’t have enough money to pay the inherited lands, stocks etc. The government will claim and own it.
    2. I and my friends usually go dutch after eating the food we ordered, maybe it’s usual here and tradition.
But,commonly if you’re a married person you must pay all the bills when you want treat the whole family.
    3. I’ve never experienced this even once, but most of the people live here take risk for gambling. As if they experienced one time winning, they get indulge to win and spend again until the last penny spent.
    4. Yeah! I admit a cheapstake woman, because Ive had different experienced in life, that teach me how to value every cents you sweat.
5.But,sometimes I do burn too, if that things captured my eyes and very valuable I wouldn’t let that things for tommorow. I did burning my whole year salary when I saw a beautiful car for me.
    6. I don’t have the mindset of
Burning the hole in a pocket, because I usually left my cash and credit card at home.I always bring the just amount which I can spend for the whole day or so.
7.When I were young, I understand how hard the life ,It is really living from the hand to mouth or less than that.I understand that it’s not my parents fault because we live in a poor family and I am really bless to learn different things, when you don’t have nothing and survive. to be able to live.
