Advanced English Vocabulary - The Letter "H"

Hi! Welcome back to our advanced English vocabulary series. Please don't heckle my brother for being so tired during the first 10 minutes of the show. He had just finished working a long shift at the hospital the night before, and he was very tired. As you'll hear him say in the podcast, it's important to have humility if you're going to practice medicine; once hubris takes over, you (and your patients) are in trouble!

If the paragraph above is confusing, then you haven't listened to this episode of the podcast yet 😉 Download it, listen to it, then come back and read this first paragraph again!

My guest on this week's episode is my younger brother, Benny. He's been on the podcast many times before, but never for an AEV session.

Benny and I discussed 5 words that begin with the letter "H". Try to combine all of the words that we teach in this episode into a single sentence in the comments section!

5 Advanced English Words | The Letter "H"

Harmony

If something is in harmony with something else, those two things work well together. The result of those two things together is positive and pleasant. (This word is also frequently used with people).

People can live together in harmony.

A combination of notes in music can produce a harmony.

Heckle

If you heckle someone, you yell and scream at that person while they are performing something; you are trying to get them to make a mistake.

You most often hear this word used in the context of sports. When the away team comes to town, the home crowd heckles them.

Hypocritical

If someone is hypocritical, they pretend to have qualities or values that they don't really have.

In the podcast, I give the example of a messy room. Both Benny and I aren't the greatest when it comes to keeping our rooms tidy. It would be hypocritical of me to criticize Benny for having a messy room because I also can't keep my room clean!

Hubris

Hubris (noun) is over confidence. If you say someone has hubris, you mean that person is too cocky and arrogant.

Hubris usually gets people into a lot of trouble.

Humility

Humility is kind of the opposite of hubris. If you have humility, you don't believe that you are better than other people. You see your own flaws, and you recognize that you're imperfect and capable of making mistakes.

My challenge for you:

Here is my sentence by using “H” letters :

If we would like to have harmony in life we should have humility, less huristic and hypocritical and of course avoid to heckle anyone as well.

Many thanks to this podcast, Jacob, and please say hello to Benny for me.😊 Have a lovely weekend to both of you!
