Advanced English Vocabulary - The Letter "G"

I hope that you don't grimace at the sight of all these advanced English vocabulary words. They're not too generic, and English speakers use them regularly in conversation. But, if you have any grievances about this episode, just let me know in the comments.

My guest this week is leading the way in terms of appearances on this podcast. Richard Shilling is a big EnglishTVLive fan. He's also a very close friend who I've known for a long time. This is his third appearance on the podcast, and this advanced vocabulary series wouldn't have been the same without him.

Richard and I discussed the meanings of 5 "G" words that are slightly advanced. These are words that the two of us actually use in conversation with other native speakers.

You can find these five words listed below.

Try to combine all of the words that we teach in this episode into a single sentence in the comments section!

5 Advanced English Words | The Letter "G"

Grimace

Above you'll see two types of grimaces. One is a Mcdonald's mascot, and the other is an example of a grimace. (Richard jokes about this near the beginning of the episode.) If you grimace, you make a face like Richard is making above.

Generic

If something is generic, it is very typical. There is nothing too unique or special about that thing.

Grapple

If you grapple with a problem, you struggle with that problem. You can physically grapple with someone (like people do when they wrestle). You can also grapple with abstract things (usually things that are more difficult and/or serious).

Grievance

If you have a grievance about something, you are upset about that thing; you feel that something unfair has happened to you.

Imagine if your neighbours throw a big party. The noise from the party keeps you up all night, and you feel groggy the next day. You have a grievance!

Grim

If a situation is grim, that thing is not great; it is depressing. The weather in Calgary can be kind of grim sometimes.

My challenge for you:

  • Cuneyt says:

I like very much the way you guys talking and giving examples about the vocabulary. It’s strongly advised to the people who want to speak better English. Keep going. Thanks a lot.

  • JY says:

Because of the reason he made grimace on his face, Mike suddenly grapples with him who feels it’s a total grievance, but Mike didn’t care about this genetic complain and just goes his own way, making him grim.

  • Nim says:

Wow…I’d say this episode is not generic😊 while listening your conversation, I was grimaced because I heard Jacob was drinking coffee.😅right now I have a grievance about construction home and I hope I can grapple with this kind of grim!

Thanks so much Jacob and Richard and I will follow your IG as well, Richard ❤
