Advanced English Vocabulary - The Letter "G"

I hope you don't find this episode of Advanced English Vocabulary to be frivolous. And if learning English feels like a futile endeavor, just remember that it takes time. Be patient. Keep working hard. And keep listening to this podcast 😉

My guest this week is one of our teachers at EnglishTVLive--Diana! All of the words we taught are listed below.

Try to combine all of the words that we teach in this episode into a single sentence in the comments section!

5 Advanced English Words | The Letter "F"

Frivolous

If you describe something as frivolous, you mean that thing is not serious.

People can be frivolous. People can also behave in frivolous ways. To spend money frivolously, for example, means to waste money on silly things.

Flaunt

If someone flaunts something, they show that thing to other people in order to try to obtain admiration from other people. It's kind of like showing off. People often flaunt their wealth, for example--they drive around in very expensive cars.

Fluke

If something is a fluke, that thing happened accidentally and was good. Winning the lottery is a fluke that happens to very few people. Finding 20 dollars on the street (kind of like winning the lottery) is a fluke.

Forte

If something is (or isn't) your forte, you are good (or not good) at that thing. Cooking is not my forte, but I still enjoy it from time to time.

Futile

If you say that something is futile, you mean that it is useless to do that thing. Whatever you are doing is not likely to produce the result you are hoping for, so that thing is futile.

Imagine that you drop your phone in the toilet and it stops working. You are trying all kinds of ways to fix it, but nothing is working. Your attempts to fix the phone are futile.

My challenge for you:

Try to combine ALL 5 words into a single sentence!

  • Nim says:

Everyone says Peter is so lucky, he got a heritage by a fluke but he is not a flaunter and frivolous person because he can earn by himself and selling car is one of his forte so it is futile to think about that heritage.

Thank you so much Jacob and Diana for this episode.

  • JY says:

Gabrielle got $50 on the street by a fluke and she began to flaunt it everywhere which is one of her forte but which also is a futile, and the bottom line is that everyone on that street think she is a frivolous person.

    • jacobteacher says:

Hahaha, it certainly seems ridiculous that she would flaunt the $50 that she found by fluke 😉 Nice work JY!

  • Dmitry says:

It’s completely futile when fluke happens in the life of a frivolous person Whose forte is flaunting by stuff they are lucky to have.
